IIS7 Windows 2008 Server Create.Object problem solved

]]> In the process this week of doing a rediculous amount of devlopment work, part of which is migrating my three sites hosting on windows 2003 server with iis6, to windows server 2008 with iis7….

If you are also wondering why as in my case jMail was not happy on iis 7 win2k8, it seems to be because it’s now using the network service account rather than IUSR, so you need to assign the correct execute permissions to the dll that you need to access….

I’n my case, I just granted execute permisson to C:\Program Files\Dimac\w3JMail\jmail.dll to “everyone”… now that machine happily sends emails using that object…

]]> So you have a few hundred/thousand twitter followers, who are all following lots of people, how do you increase the likelyhood that your tweets will get seen by as many people as possible?

A combination of two free services will help you maximise your twitter exposure, firstly tweriod will carry out an analysis of your last 5000 followers to tell you the times and days when most of them are usually online. When you then sign up for free to buffer your tweets are then temporarily stored “buffered” for times when people are most likely to catch your tweets…

For me it’s 4pm in the week that most of my followers are around, so they can expect a small flurry of tweets to be unleashed around then.

]]> We are at the end of our massive house renovation process and have the IKEA wardrobes in place but the place looked kind of bare with all the freshly plastered and painted walls. What we needed was something to make our sons bedroom look more interesting and child friendly so bought some Thomas the Tank Engine and In the Night Garden wall stickers.

Also we saw you could get things like a race track that would cover up lots of a wall but cost a fortune in the west London shop we were checking for beds. While on holiday in Eastern Europe though we just bought loads of large stickers and my wife put them up on our return and the house looks great now with colourful circles on our ikea pax wardrobes and nature patterns on the walls, really does look stylish and more interesting than a plain wall.

You can also easily remove these kinds of stickers from the walls when you fancy a change, I found this site based in America that delivers worldwide who seem to have some amazing stickers and are at most half the price that these things are in the UK, I’ll certainly be ordering from them next.

When Theo is a bit older we might be getting some nintendo mario wall stickers like these

Hack LG 47LD450 to play video from USB

]]> Are you also the lucky owner of an LG 47LD450 and want to have it play DivX movies directly from your massive external hard drive?. It’s super easy to do and costs either nothing or very little to do.

Here’s how I did it.
Get a universal remote control from ebay, eBay item #180494866735 One For All URC3920 Slim Design 2 in 1 Universal Remote

  • Put some batteries in the remote, and set it up for TV use as follows
  • Press TV, then hold the magic button until it flashes twice, then lazily use the search mode to get the right code for the TV by pressing channel + repeatedly
  • Once the TV turns off you have the code, so press magic again to store it

Your new remote is now hooked up to talk to your TV,  to finish

  • Turn on the TV and point the universal remote at it then press magic once
  • Enter 00018, then use the password 0413 to enter the service menu
  • Goto menu 3 (third one down)
  • Change USB from 0 to 1, then turn the TV off and on again to enable

Now when you goto media on the options screen you will see Movies, Images, and Music! enjoy

    ]]>     2472060408 acb16a4d6d m Another productivity tip for people who are computer literateDo you use a program that requires you to push the same seemingly pointless “are you sure you want to do this?” type buttons?, wouldn’t it be nice if they were pressed automatically so you could save your fingers and do something else?

    Some computer programs pester you with their endless dialog boxes repeating the same questions. Would you like to do X? Are you sure you mean to do Y? If you know what you want and are tired of telling your PC the same things over and over, use PTFB (short for “Push the Freakin’ Button”), a button-pressing utility I have been using since 2005 and has saved me tens of thousands of pointless clicks.

    When a dialog box asks the PC equivalent of “are we there yet?”, in a few seconds you can tell PTFB which button it should press, and the program will take care of that specific confirmation button forever afterwards. You can set the program to press the same button in similar dialogs as well as it’s quite flexible if you need it to be.

    You can download the free version here, or buy the pro version so the guy can make some money for his great software – the free version has been all I need for this sort of stuff for the past 4 years though.

    Give it a try, keep away the RSI. No those are no my fingers in the image, make sure they are not yours either.

    Quick tip you may not know about windows

    ]]>     Might start throwing tips into this blog from time to time, here’s a quicky…

    In programs such as a web browser where you type something into a textbox and it lists all the things you have typed before, if you are like me and actually use those to save you typing what you are looking for in full this is for you.

    To remove stored entries in almost any of them just highlight them using the arrow keys and press the delete key to remove them from the history of that individual textbox so you have less crap to scroll through as you use your computer efficiently.

    This probably works on mac and linux computers too, logically it would but I only have time to use one PC OS.
